Course and Grading Sunday 17th June 2012

The next grading course is fast approaching and in order to make sure our club members are ready for it we are planning to hold ‘mock’ gradings during training sessions on Thursday 24th May and Monday 28th May 2012(this training Session will be held at Ralph Butterfield School).

This will enable Sensei Mike to judge who is ready to attempt the next grading and identify any areas that need to be worked on in order for everyone to have the best chance possible. You will informed after the mock grading if you will be put forward to attempt your grading.

There are only eight training sessions before the grading course. Please can you make every effort to attend as many as possible.

If you have any questions about this, the grading syllabus, or anything else, please ask one of the club instructors of committee members.

Self Defence Classes

On Sunday the Club held 2 'Introduction to Self Defence' classes for ladies. The sessions were led by Sensei Mike and Sensei Ian with help from Jim, Brenda and Helen.

We also held a kids karate class for the over 5's at the same time and Lorraine ran these with help from Holly, Bethany, Kian, Elizabeth and Jemimah.

Everyone who attended the classes seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves especially when they were defending themselves against the black belts.

After the sessions lots of the ladies and children stopped for refreshments. The sessions were attended by 22 ladies and 9 children some of whom were so impressed that they want to attend the clubs regular training sessions.

There was also great interest in the Club's new children’s classes for children age 5 and above that are going to be led by Lorraine and run on Monday and Thursday from 7pm - 8pm.

For more information on the children’s classes email info@haxbykarate.co.uk or pop down to one of our training sessions.

The Selby Shotokan Karate Club Competition 2012

The annual Selby Competition is always one of the highlights of the year for the club. The competition is designed as an introduction into the world of karate competitions and as such is an excellent way to give people a taste of what competition is like, in a friendly, supportive and fun environment.  This year there were a total of 11 clubs competing, so the friendly rivalry which has always existed between us and Selby has now expanded to include clubs from Leeds, Grimsby, Bradford, and further afield. Competition was tough!

The club sent a strong 16 karateka team to the Selby competition, ably lead by Sempai Lorraine as Team Captain. Sensei Mike, Sensei Ian, Jim and Cathy supported the team by offering Sensei Paul their Judging, Admin and Photography skills.

The Haxby Squad - Back row: (L-R) Aaron, Lorraine, Holly, Pete, Helen
Front row: (L-R) Kian, Sam, Gil, Oliver, Bailey, Oli, Elizabeth, Lauren, Bethany, Jemimah,
                             Harriet.
As always the club members did themselves proud. We came third overall as a club with two Gold medals, two silver, three bronze and two fourth places. More importantly everyone should be proud of the sportsmanship that each squad member displayed (Oli at one point had to chase his opponent halfway across the mat in order to shake his hand!).

It was the first time taking part in a karate competition for some of our squad, and everyone gave their all. Holly put in a determined performance in a very close kata competition to win through and secure a Gold medal (and joint second place for The Sensei Rodrigo Bastidas Memorial Cup). Lorraine (who is always reluctant to enter) added another Silver for kumite to her growing collection. Helen continued her string of competition successes by adding a Bronze medal for Kumite and only just missing out on a medal in kata. Kian did very well in a large and very competitive knee boxing competition to scoop a Bronze medal. Jemimah just missed out on a medal for kata, she was obviously saving her best efforts for the next event!

The ABC guide to kata

That’s Family kata by the way!

This year the club continued the tradition of claiming a clean sweep of the medals for family kata – this time with the ABC approach – that’s Acaster (Gold), Bamford (Silver) and Collins (Bronze). Well done to all three teams – it was a close fought competition and we are very proud of the result as it reflects our commitment to being a family orientated club.
We want to continue this success in coming years so club members – ask your mums, dads, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters or cousins if they want to come and train and  next year it could be you!

Thank you to all the parents and supporters who came out in force to support the squad. It makes a huge difference to the people that are competing to know that the crowd is with them, and without your support and encouragement throughout the year none of us would progress into the karateka that we are today.

Finally, a huge thank you to Sensei Paul for once again hosting a fantastic competition. He must have put in a huge amount of preparation and work behind the scenes in order for the day to run that smoothly. We look forward to trying to keep hold of the trophies next year!

Selby Competition

Good luck to all club members who are competing in the Selby Competition on Sunday. Please remember you need to be there at 10am to register - see Lorraine when you arrive. Also every competitor must have a gun shield and mitts - don't worry if you have not got mitts, I am sure that you can borrow some from a team mate or fellow competitor - however, no sharing of gum shields!

If you are spectating, please remember to cheer for your team mates - it makes all the difference when you are out there on the mats competing!
